Born on May 17, 1938, she became one of the better-known voices in South Indian cinema, singing in Telugu, Sinhalese, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam.
Her career began in childhood, when she first sang for film at the age of seven in the Telugu production Tyagayya in 1946. By her early teens, she was already lending her voice to lead characters, and she later scored a popular hit with “Aasaiyum En Nesamum” from the Tamil film Gulebakavali in 1955. Over a long career that stretched across decades, she is credited with more than 6,000 songs.
