Kennard, the American judge who served as a justice of the Supreme Court of California from 1989 to 2014, died on September 18, 2026, aged 85. Born Josephine Luther in Bandung in 1941, she was appointed to the court by Gov.
George Deukmejian and went on to become its longest-serving sitting justice at the time of her retirement in 2014. Kennard was retained by California voters three times, first in 1990 to complete an unexpired term and again in 1994 and 2006 for successive 12-year terms. Widely known as Joyce Kennard, she was also recognized as a lawyer and politician and received the Margaret Brent Award.
