Frank Pieter Israel, a Dutch astronomer, died on September 18, 2026, aged 79.
Born in Delft on December 31, 1946, he earned his PhD in astronomy at Leiden Observatory in 1976 with work on H II regions observed using the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. He went on to develop the blister model of H II regions and later worked at the Owens Valley Radio Observatory from 1977 to 1980.
Much of his career focused on the interstellar medium of external galaxies, and from 2005 he was a professor of astronomy at Leiden University, where he taught nearby galaxies.
