Jovan Despotović, a Serbian art historian and art critic, died October 24, 2026, aged 74.
Born in Belgrade on April 16, 1952, he lived in the city and studied at the University of Belgrade, where he earned a degree in art history in 1976. His career included posts in cultural administration, heritage protection, broadcasting and museum leadership.
From 2001 to 2004, he served as Deputy Minister of Culture for the Republic of Serbia. He also directed the protection of cultural heritage at the Coordination Center for Kosovo and Metohija. In 2004, Despotović moved into editorial work in public broadcasting, becoming editor of the Cultural and Information Desk for the Third Programme of Radio Belgrade and Radio Television of Serbia. He held that post until 2014. From 2014 to 2015, he was director of the Museum of Contemporary Art. The sequence of roles took him from a government culture portfolio to heritage work and then to editorial and museum positions. His university training in art history and his work as an art critic and historian formed the professional background to those appointments.
