José María Cruz Novillo, the Spanish painter, designer and sculptor, died on May 2, 2026.
Born in Cuenca on May 21, 1936, he was also a sculptor, engraver and graphic designer. Cruz Novillo was known for his work on logos and for the re-branding of many entities and companies in post-Francoist Spain.
He began painting in 1950 and later moved to Madrid, where he built a career that included work for the Spain Pavilion at the 1964 New York World’s Fair and designs for a wide range of public and private institutions. He received the Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts.
