Born James Alfred Bradshaw in St. Clairsville, Ohio, on January 13, 1939, he attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where he played quarterback for the Chattanooga Mocs.
He graduated from St. Clairsville High School in 1958 and was later inducted into the Chattanooga Hall of Fame in 1962. Bradshaw entered professional football as a 1963 draft pick of the Steelers in the NFL and the Boston Patriots in the AFL, and he went on to play five seasons in Pittsburgh.
