Jerzy Bańczerowski, a Polish professor of philology, died on June 9, 2026, at the age of 88.

Born on October 28, 1938, in Ożarów, he built a career in general and comparative linguistics, with research also spanning set-theoretic axiomatization of linguistic theory, Finno-Ugric linguistics and Asian languages. He served as director of the Institute of Linguistics at Adam Mickiewicz University from 1977 to 1991 and again from 1994 to 2008, and headed the university’s Department of General and Comparative Linguistics from 1969.

Bańczerowski was also a member of the Committee on Oriental Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences and helped establish new philology studies at the university, including Finnish philology and ethnolinguistics.
