Born Tadeusz Władysław Lutak on August 29, 1917, in Żarnowa, then part of Austria-Hungary, he was known by the nom de guerre “Pancerz.” Before the war, he served in Poland’s armoured forces and took part in the September 1939 campaign. During the German occupation, he joined the Union of Armed Struggle and later the Home Army, both Polish resistance organizations.

A captain, Lutak received the Knight’s and Officer’s distinctions of the Order of Polonia Restituta, the Armia Krajowa Cross and the Army Medal for War 1939–45. His other awards included the Partisan Cross, the Medal of Victory and Freedom 1945, and the Medal for Participation in the Defensive War of 1939. He was born to Piotr Lutak, a railway switchman, and Katarzyna, née Dudek, who managed the family farm. One of nine children, he had five sisters and three brothers. In August 2026, he was reported to be Poland’s oldest living man.
