Hélène Hazera, a French journalist and transgender rights activist, died October 5, 2026, aged 74.

Born in Paris in 1952, she grew up in a violent household. At 17, she was placed in a psychiatric hospital and diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

After becoming estranged from her family, she sought admission to the Institut des hautes études cinématographiques; she later said the school’s director blocked her entry. She then turned to sex work. At 21, Hazera came out as transgender. In Paris, she befriended singer Marie France and joined the Front homosexuel d’action révolutionnaire and the Gazolines, groups associated with gay liberation activism. She appeared in Adolfo Arrieta’s 1974 film Les Intrigues de Sylvia Couski. Photographer Nan Goldin, visiting Paris, met Hazera and photographed her. In 1978, Hazera joined the newspaper Libération, where her journalism included coverage of music-video directors. Her professional work also included Radio France, acting and film directing. Across journalism and activism, she was a prominent French voice on transgender rights.
