Jane Pegel, an American sailor who was elected to the United States National Sailing Hall of Fame in 2021, died on June 6, 2026.
She was 92. Known also as Jane Wiswell Pegel, she competed on both water and ice and built a long career in sailing that included ice boat racing and summer competition on Lake Geneva.
Pegel grew up on Williams Bay in Wisconsin and learned ice boat racing in a Skeeter, later switching to the International DN class. She won the Mrs. Charles Francis Adams Trophy, the United States Women’s Sailing Championship, in 1957 and again in 1964, and also captured the United States Women’s Singlehanded championship, the Allegra Knapp Mertz trophy. In addition to racing, she was involved in the junior program at the Lake Geneva Yacht Club, where she served as an instructor and as president of the board of directors.
