
Herman Suykerbuyk, a Belgian politician and civil servant, died on February 21, 2026, at the age of 92.
Born in Kapellen on January 5, 1934, he studied law at the Catholic University of Leuven from 1952 to 1957. A member of the Christian People’s Party (CVP), he was first elected to the Chamber of Representatives in 1968 and served until 1987.
Suykerbuyk also served on the Cultural Council for the Dutch Cultural Community from 1971 to 1981, later the Flemish Council. In the Flemish Parliament, he was associated with the controversial “Suykerbuyk decree,” which was later overturned by the Court of Arbitration.
