Hans-Dieter Sues, a German-born American paleontologist and Senior Research Geologist and Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology at the National Museum of Natural History of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, died on February 22, 2026, at age 70.
He was born in Rheydt, North Rhine-Westphalia, West Germany, on January 13, 1956. Sues attended Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, the University of Alberta and Harvard University, where he earned a Ph.D.
in 1984. He also worked at McGill University, the Smithsonian, the Royal Ontario Museum and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. He was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1998, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2003, and served as president of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology from 2002 to 2004.
