He was 74. Born in Kassel in 1952, he went to school in Cologne and completed his Abitur at the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in 1971.
After studying history, economics, finance, political science and social psychology, he earned a diploma from the University of Cologne in 1979. He began his career while working on the student magazine direct, later joined Deutschlandfunk as a regular freelance contributor to political news desks in 1977, and entered the FAZ news department in 1979. From 1981 he reported on politics from Bonn, and his work was recognized with the Medienpreis des Deutschen Bundestages and the Theodor Wolff Award.
