Born Frank Landsberger in Berlin in October 1928, he was the first United Kingdom professor of information systems and an emeritus professor in the Department of Information Systems at the London School of Economics. He was educated at Willesden County Grammar School and the London School of Economics, where he graduated in economics in 1950.
Land was involved in the development and definition of information systems and its curriculum, and chaired working parties for the British Computer Society, the National Computing Centre and the Council for National Academic Awards. He was married to Ailsa Land, a professor of operations research.
