He served in the United States Marine Corps during the last year of World War II, then spent 1948 to 1950 as a Mormon missionary in England. After returning, he studied at Weber State College and Brigham Young University, where he served as student body president and graduated in 1954 with a degree in accounting. He later earned an MBA from Harvard Business School.
