Green, who was awarded an OBE, was born on June 26, 1926, and grew up in Dagenham, Essex, above a bike shop. She began her career in the 1940s as a shorthand typist and secretary at Woman & Beauty, where she was promoted to fashion editor within two years.
She later held the same post at Housewife before moving for a period to the advertising agency W.S. Crawford. The daughter of a local shoe-shop owner and a deaf mother, she came from an impoverished Jewish background.
