Born Donald James Cooper in New York City, he played as a pitcher in Major League Baseball in parts of four seasons, with the Minnesota Twins from 1981 to 1982, the Toronto Blue Jays in 1983 and the New York Yankees in 1985. He later became a long-serving pitching coach for the Chicago White Sox, joining the staff in 2002 and remaining with the organization through 2020.
During his tenure, the White Sox won the 2005 World Series, and pitchers under his guidance included Mark Buehrle, Philip Humber and Lucas Giolito, each of whom threw a no-hitter or perfect game.
