Dean Brooks, an American physician and actor who served as superintendent of Oregon State Hospital for 27 years, died on May 30, 2013, in Salem, Ore.

He was 96. Born in Colony, Kan., Brooks, also known as Dean Kent Brooks, trained in medicine at the University of Kansas Medical School and went on to lead the state hospital from 1955 to 1982.

He became widely known beyond medicine in the 1970s when he allowed One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest to be filmed at the hospital and appeared in the movie as Dr. John Spivey.
