
Chan Santokhi, the Surinamese politician who served as president of Suriname from 2020 to 2025, died on March 30, 2026.
He was also minister of justice from 2005 to 2010 and served twice as an MNA. Santokhi was elected president after the 2020 elections, when he was the sole nominee and was chosen by acclamation in an uncontested vote.
He was inaugurated on July 16, 2020.
Chandrikapersad “Chan” Santokhi (Dutch: [tɕɑnˈdrikaːpɛrˌsɑt sɑnˈtɔki]; Sarnami: चंद्रिकापेर्साद संतोखी, pronounced [cⁿd̪rikɑːpərəsɑːd̪ə sⁿt̪oːkʰiː]; 3 February 1959 – 30 March 2026) was a Surinamese politician and police officer who served as the ninth president of Suriname from 2020 to 2025. After winning the 2020 elections, Santokhi was the sole nominee for president of Suriname. On 13 July, Santokhi was elected president by acclamation in an uncontested election. He was inaugurated on 16 July.
