Carles Solà, the Spanish academic administrator and politician who served as rector of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, died on September 12, 2026, aged 81.
Born in Xàtiva, in Valencia Province, on January 1, 1945, he built a career at the University of Valencia and the Autonomous University of Barcelona, where he taught chemical engineering. Solà earned a doctorate in chemistry and went on to work in biochemical engineering, producing more than 130 publications, supervising 22 doctoral theses and directing research projects.
He led the UAB from 1994 to 2002 and later held posts including president of the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities, a member of the executive committee of the International Association of University Presidents, and a board member of the European University Association.
