Andrzej Elżanowski, a Polish paleontologist and zoologist, died on September 9, 2026, aged 76.

Born in Przasnysz on January 21, 1950, he studied at the University of Warsaw and worked at the University of Wrocław and later at the University of Warsaw’s Faculty of Artes Liberales. Elżanowski specialized in bird phylogeny and Mesozoic birds, and in 1992 he and Peter Wellnhofer described the theropod Archaeornithoides.

He also wrote on Archaeopterygiformes and in 2001 identified the Solnhofen specimen of Archaeopteryx as a separate genus and species, naming it Wellnhoferia grandis.
