Wolfgang Schleidt dead at age 98, Austrian scientist

Wolfgang Schleidt, an Austrian scientist and zoologist, died on June 7, 2026, at the age of 98.

Born in Vienna on December 18, 1927, he worked in the areas of bioacoustics, communication and classical ethology. Schleidt served as assistant to Konrad Lorenz from 1950 to 1965, later taught zoology at the University of Maryland from 1965 to 1985, and directed the Konrad Lorenz Institute for Ethology in Vienna at the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

He was also an early pioneer of bioacoustics.
