Born in Aschaffenburg on May 15, 1933, she built an early career in music before entering public life, working as a harp and piano teacher in Brazil from 1961 to 1963 and later as the first harpist with a university orchestra there. She joined the Christian Social Union in Bavaria in 1965 and went on to serve two terms in the Bundestag from 1972 to 1980 and five terms in the European Parliament from 1979 to 2004.

Schleicher also held leadership roles in the Paneuropean Union in Bavaria and later as its deputy federal chair.
