Born Terence Lewis on December 29, 1935, he was educated at Mount Carmel School in Salford and completed National Service in the Royal Army Medical Corps before working as a personnel officer. He entered the House of Commons in 1983 and held the Worsley seat until the 2005 general election, when he was succeeded by Barbara Keeley.
In 2010, Lewis announced his resignation from the Labour Party, saying it had “lost its soul.”
