Vibert Cornwall, the Vincentian jazz singer known professionally as Ray King, died on July 20, 2026.
Born Vibert Edmund Cornwall in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in October 1938, he later migrated to Coventry as a teenager and began singing in clubs there in 1966. He performed under the name Ray King after joining Suzi and the Kingsize Kings, whose name was subsequently changed to The Ray King Soul Band.
Cornwall was also remembered as a formative influence on Coventry’s 2-Tone movement and as a supporter of the city’s West Indian and black ethnic communities. In 2010, Coventry University awarded him an honorary doctorate of letters for his volunteering and altruistic work.
