Tatsuya Hori dead at age 90, Japanese politician, governor of Hokkaido, lung cancer

Tatsuya Hori, Japanese politician and governor of Hokkaido from 1995 to 2003, died on May 16, 2026, of cancer.

He was 90. Hori was born in Tomakishi, Karafuto, on Nov.

22, 1935, and graduated from Hokkaido University’s Department of Agriculture in 1958. He entered the Hokkaido government that year and later served as lieutenant governor. He also served as director of Hokkaido-Kitami University, chairman of the board of Sapporo University and associate professor at Tokyo University of Agriculture.
