Tariq al-Sawah, an Egyptian citizen held at the U.S.
Guantanamo Bay detention camps in Cuba, died on April 2, 2026, at age 68. Also spelled Tarek El Sawah, he was born in Alexandria, Egypt, on November 2, 1957.
He was held at Guantanamo Bay from May 2002 to January 2016. Al-Sawah was charged with war crimes, but those charges were dismissed on March 1, 2012.
Tariq Mahmud Ahmad Muhammad al-Sawah (2 November 1957 – c. 2 April 2026), also spelled Tarek El Sawah, was a citizen of Egypt who was held in the United States Guantanamo Bay detention camps, in Cuba, from May 2002 to January 2016.
