Born Sheldon Scott Sawyer in Jaffrey, New Hampshire, he graduated from Conant High School in 1953 and from the University of New Hampshire in 1957. After college, he taught agriculture at Walpole High School from 1958 to 1961 and later worked as a farmer. A Republican, he served in the New Hampshire House from 2004 to 2006.
