A member of the Bangladesh Awami League, he served as state minister of fisheries and livestock and as minister of primary and mass education, and later sat on the party’s presidium council. Born on November 30, 1941, in Mostafabad village of what is now Biral Upazila in Dinajpur District, he worked as a teacher before entering politics.
Roy was elected to parliament for Dinajpur-7 in 1979 and returned to the House for Dinajpur-2 in 1986, 1991 and June 1996.
