Born in Valencia on May 8, 1940, he was ordained to the priesthood in 1963. He later served as titular bishop of Croæ and auxiliary bishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Valencia from 1984 to 1988, bishop of the Diocese of Jaén from 1988 to 2004, and archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Mérida-Badajoz from 2004 to 2015.
