Rosa Fung Pineda, a Peruvian archaeologist and university teacher, died on September 6, 2026, aged 90.
Among the first professional female archaeologists in Peru, she taught for many years at the National University of San Marcos, where she also studied ethnology and archaeology. Born in Casma, she specialized in pre-Hispanic Andean history, with particular attention to the Preceramic, Initial Period and Early Horizon eras, as well as the use of maritime resources in Andean society.
She earned her bachelor’s degree from UNMSM in 1963 and completed a doctoral dissertation on the Las Haldas archaeological site in 1967, later becoming professor emeritus at the university in 1999.
