Known as Ronald Valentine Trubuhovich, he was of Dalmatian parentage and was born in New Plymouth on March 6, 1929. After the age of 97, he spent his childhood in Auckland.
He attended St Peter’s College, where he was dux in both 1946 and 1947, and later completed degrees in dentistry and medicine at the University of Otago, including a Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 1953 and an MB ChB with distinction in physiology in 1961. His academic record also included the J. Malcolm Prize in Physiology and the Geigy Essay Prize in Psychiatry, and he received a Nuffield Dominion Scholarship to Oxford University.
