
Richard Dugdale, an American oceanographer, died on January 21, 2026, at age 97.
Born Richard Cooper Dugdale in Madison, Wisconsin, he earned degrees from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, including a BS in electrical engineering, an MS in botany and zoology, and a PhD in zoology. He later worked at the Institute of Marine Science at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, where he wrote results of oceanographic cruises.
In 1963, he was named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In his later years, he served as Estuary and Ocean Science Center Research Professor in the department of biology at San Francisco State University.
