Peter Messent, a British academic and professor of American Studies at the University of Nottingham, died on March 24, 2026, aged 79.
Born in Wimbledon, London, he attended Wimbledon College before earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in American Studies from the University of Manchester in 1969 and a Master of Philosophy degree on humour in American fiction in 1971. He was the author of several books of literary studies about Mark Twain and worked as an academic from 1971 to 2011.
