Paul Butler, a Northern Irish politician and former member of the Northern Ireland Assembly, died on September 23, 2026, aged 68.
Born in Lisburn, Butler was an Irish republican politician who served as the Assembly member for Lagan Valley from 2007 to 2011. He had also been a member of the Provisional Irish Republican Army and spent 15 years in prison after being convicted of the murder of reserve Royal Ulster Constabulary officer John Rodgers in 1974.
Butler later became the Sinn Féin group leader on Lisburn City Council and sat on the council from 1997 until 2011.
