Mohammed Benchicou, the Algerian journalist and writer who directed and published the opposition newspaper Le Matin, died on September 24, 2026, aged 74.
Also known as Mohammed Boualem Benchicou, he was born in Miliana on July 1, 1952. In 1989, he helped found the movement of Algerian journalists, and he later led the team that relaunched Alger Républicain after its ban in 1965.
After leaving that paper in 1991 with Saïd Mekbel and Fodil Mezali, he went on to establish Le Matin, which was closed in August 2006. In June 2004, Benchicou was sentenced to two years in prison for an exchange-regulations offense. He received the PEN Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award.
