Michael Hendricks, an AmericanCanadian gay rights activist, died on July 18, 2026.

Along with René LeBoeuf, he became one of the most visible advocates in Quebec’s gay-rights movement and was among the first same-sex couples to be legally married in the province. The pair helped lead ACT-UP activists during the AIDS crisis in the 1980s and 1990s, pressing the City of Montreal to create a permanent memorial to Quebecers who died of AIDS.

After years of resistance, city officials dropped their opposition in September 1994, and Parc de l’Espoir was established in Montreal’s gay village. In 2019, Hendricks and LeBoeuf again mobilized around the memorial when the city proposed a redesign that would have removed the original site.
