Born in Turin on May 19, 1939, he became one of Italy’s best-known sprinters and also competed in international athletics events, winning five individual medals and three more with the national relay team. While studying chemistry after attending Liceo Classico “Cavour,” he competed at the Rome Olympics and surged into prominence by equaling the then world record of 20.5 seconds in the 200-meter semifinals before taking gold in the final.
