Of Romanian origin, she specialised in the history of communism and built much of her career around that field. Marcou graduated in literature from the University of Bucharest before earning a doctorate in history from Paris-Sorbonne University in 1986.
She worked at the Center for International Studies and Research at the Paris Institute of Political Studies, led a research group on the international communist movement from 1975 to 1981, and taught at Sciences Po from 1982 to 1988.
