He was best known for playing Chief of Police Fletcher Daniels on “Hill Street Blues” throughout the series’s run, and also appeared in “Cinderella,” “As the World Turns,” “Probe,” “Law & Order” and “Santa Barbara.” Born in New York City, he graduated from Erasmus Hall High School and Brooklyn College before earning a master’s degree in marriage and family counseling from the University of Vermont. Cypher also performed on Broadway, particularly in musical theatre, and remained active in acting and singing across a career that spanned nearly seven decades.
