
Jimmy Hughes, an American rhythm and blues singer best known for “Steal Away,” died on May 20, 2026, at the age of 88.
Born Jimmy J. Hughes on February 3, 1938, he was raised in Leighton, Alabama, and began singing in a gospel quartet, The Singing Clouds, while in high school.
He auditioned for producer Rick Hall at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals in 1962, leading to his early recording “I’m Qualified.” In 1964, he returned with “Steal Away,” which became his biggest success and was important in the early development of the Muscle Shoals music industry.
