Jim Peters, the New Zealand politician and former MP who served from 2002 to 2005, died on September 15, 2026, aged 88.
Born James Leonard Peters in Kawakawa in 1937, he was educated at the University of Auckland and Auckland Teachers Training College and later worked as a high school teacher before entering politics. He served as chairperson of the Northland Regional Council and entered Parliament as a list MP in the 2002 election for New Zealand First, the party led by his younger brother Winston Peters.
Peters was also a former head of history, geography and social studies at Mount Albert Grammar School.
