Jeelani Bano, an Indian writer and novelist, died on March 1, 2026.
Born on July 14, 1936, in Budaun, she wrote in Urdu, Hindi, Gujarati and Telugu. Bano began writing at an early age and published her first story, “Ek Nazar Idhar Bhi,” in 1952.
She was credited with 22 books, including anthologies, novels, an autobiography, and a collection of correspondence with other writers. In 2001, she received the Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award.
