Jason Collins dead at age 47, American basketball player, glioblastoma

Jason Collins, an American basketball player who played for the New Jersey Nets, Atlanta Hawks and Boston Celtics, died on May 12, 2026, at age 47 from glioblastoma.

Collins was a center for 13 seasons in the National Basketball Association and played college basketball for Stanford, where he earned third-team All-American honors in 2001. He was selected by the Houston Rockets with the 18th overall pick in the 2001 NBA draft.

After the 2012-13 season, Collins publicly came out as gay and later became the first publicly gay athlete to play in one of the four major North American pro sports leagues when he signed with the Nets in 2014.
