Born in Imotski on September 21, 1960, he began his career with NK Mračaj before moving to Hajduk Split, where he made 362 appearances and scored 93 goals between 1976 and 1986. A dependable defensive midfielder, Gudelj also earned full international honours with Yugoslavia.

His playing career was cut short at 25 after he collapsed during a match against Red Star Belgrade; doctors later determined that he had hepatitis B. He later worked as a manager, including at Primorac Stobreč.
