Born in Pingyao, Shanxi, on December 31, 1929, she became widely known for songs including “My Motherland” and “Nanniwan.” She studied Shanxi bangzi, a local form of opera, from the age of six and was performing with a theatrical troupe in Taiyuan by the time she was 11. In the 1940s, she went on to study opera at North China United University and performed with its song-and-dance troupe.
