Gonzalo Suárez, the Spanish film director behind Rowing with the Wind, Epilogue and The Detective and Death, died on September 29, 2026, aged 92.
Born Gonzalo Suárez Morilla in Oviedo on July 30, 1934, he built a long career as a writer, screenwriter, actor, film producer and novelist, with his work in film beginning in 1966. Suárez published his first novel, De cuerpo presente, in 1963, and his films The Regent’s Wife and Don Juan in Hell were entered in the Moscow International Film Festival in 1975 and 1991, respectively.
He also appeared in Pedro Almodóvar’s 1984 film ¿Qué he hecho yo para merecer esto? as the married writer.
