Giancarlo Politi Italian art critic dead at age 89

Giancarlo Politi, Italian art critic, died on February 24, 2026.

Born in Trevi, in Umbria, on January 29, 1937, he was also a poet and publisher, and was best known as the founder of Flash Art magazine. After a brief spell as an artist and poet, he turned to art criticism.

He moved to Rome in 1965 and started his own art magazine in 1967, first called Flash and later renamed Flash Art. In 1970, he moved the magazine’s headquarters to Milan and founded the publishing house Politi Editore. Flash Art was later split into separate Italian and international editions, and in 2004 he launched the first Flash Art Fair.

Giancarlo Politi (29 January 1937 – 24 February 2026) was an Italian art critic, poet and publisher, mainly known for being the founder of Flash Art magazine.
