Born in Bra on March 9, 1948, she became one of the best-known figures in Italian and European politics, serving as a senator for Rome from 2008 to 2013 and again from 2018 to 2022, and as foreign minister from 2013 to 2014. Earlier in her career, she was elected to the European Parliament and later served as Italy’s minister of international trade from 2006 to 2008, while also holding a post as European commissioner for health and consumer protection from 1995 to 1999.
A graduate of Bocconi University in Milan, Bonino was a leading member of the Italian Radicals.
