Born in Gimli, Manitoba, he was of Icelandic descent and often wrote about the Icelandic community in Canada. He attended the University of Manitoba, where he earned a B.A., a certificate in education and an M.A., and later completed a PhD at the University of New Brunswick.
Arnason also helped found Queenston House Press in Winnipeg and served as an editor at Turnstone Press from 1975, while contributing to Canadian publishing through roles with the Literary Press Group, the Association of Canadian Publishers and the Manitoba Arts Council.
